On Campus Wireless Network Security Guide Print E-mail
Written by Jen Colby

In recent years, Wi-Fi networks have become a large part of campus life. Wi-Fi connections are often easier to set up than older wired networks and allow students to take their computers with them wherever they go. Many professors even allow or encourage students to bring their laptops to class with them, and some universities are beginning to pioneer programs that would replace public computing labs with college-provided, Wi-Fi-equipped laptops. Programs such as this would eliminate the need for computing classrooms or labs; a professor who wanted to use computers in class would be able to do so spontaneously, without having to make a special request for the use of the college’s computing facilities.

The increased use of Wi-Fi networks has been great for students and faculty, but it’s also generated increased concerns about computing security. On Wi-Fi networks, which are often publicly accessible, students need to be even more careful than usual to keep their computers secure. Many universities will happily provide information on network security to their students, so it’s always a good idea to contact the school’s IT help desk for advice. Some networks even have specific policies they will want you to adhere to.

That said, there are some basic steps students can, and should, take to make sure that their laptops are secure on campus Wi-Fi networks.
