This is a great read for anyone, not just Laptop users...
"Instant messaging clients can be a portal to a world of communication; a world of a manufactured online community; new friends; or just a way to tell your partner to stop and buy milk on the way home from work. With so many to choose from, it's interesting to take a look at the history of each client and who they are targeting now. Are you using the most suitable client for your purposes?"
"Message boards were the first online instant (almost) real time communication tools. I actually know a couple that met via a message board. Today, every PC enthusiast and even many novice PC users would use an instant messenger client as part of their everyday lives, with not only text but voice and video chat. Kids chat with their friends. Senior citizens catch up with their relatives overseas. Gamers coordinate strategic attacks in-game with their team mates. Corporate workers review business plans with colleagues. Yes, instant messaging has truly reached the mainstream. With so many clients to choose from, for free, how can you choose which one suites your needs? There are differences. They are and have all been developed with different motives in mind."
